The second album from Manchester-based ambient experimentalists Pure Sound. A follow-up to Yukon, critically acclaimed across Europe, USA and Canada.

Adding guitarist Boz Hayward, these twelve new mindblowing mesmeric tracks widen Pure Sound's direction to add a dance sensibility with hard-driving drums, steel forges and industrial rhythm tracks.

Peppered with voices from the past and tales of lost love, these sonic landscapes are anchored by insistent bass lines, found sound and extra-frenetic guitar.

Boz HaywardAnother startling slice from ambient experimentalists Pure Sound, welding great original songwriting into a glowing tapestry of shifting sonic landscapes and industrial noise.

Built around a backbone of guitar/bass set pieces featuring former A Witness bassist Vince Hunt and guitarist Boz Hayward, Submarine is a mesmeric and powerful record.

Opening track "Breathe Deep, My Love" is a tender love song with an irrepressibly catchy backbeat and determined bass line, while the epic title track "Submarine" recounts the story of a survivor of the 1915 sinking of the Lusitania with a disturbingly powerful layered soundtrack.

"Devastating Change" is a sparse tale of realisation, as an armed robber rings into a phone in show to tell his story while Hunt spits out the words to "Believe In Something" over an unsettling sonic collage.

Following on the release of the critically acclaimed debut album Yukon, Submarine is an atmospheric 28 minute journey through life stories, field recordings, tape manipulation and machine noise.

The Pure Sound project has its roots in Hunt's sound collage work on the 1986 A Witness album I Am John's Pancreas, re-relased on Euphonium in 2006 and hailed across Europe as a re-discovered classic.

Boz Hayward plays endless variations on piano and guitar, as tracks swell, develop and finally flower, dispersing and re-gathering with each chop of actuality, pinned down by Hunt's determined bass work.

This is an album rich in texture and contrast, filled with recordings of steelworks, industrial machinery, diesel engines and cuts from a record collection handed down by Hunt's late uncle.

There are tales of a survivor of the Lusitania and British soldiers in the World War Two desert campaign. There are the calls of fishmongers selling haddock and of coastguards warning of gale force winds, all given a classic Hunt twist and turned into a musical form, blended with hypnotic rhythms and lush audio soundscapes.

Submarine is the latest step in Pure Sound's journey through nightshifts, heartbreak and fatigue, a startling soundtrack of musical experiments available through Euphonium.
